Obituary: Dr. Mo Jalie
It is with deep sadness that we must announce the passing of our long-time author, Dr. Mo Jalie. For decades, Mo shaped the optical industry and education– as an professor, author, consultant, and mentor. Mo passed away on May 20, 2026, surrounded by his family. His consistently friendly and patient manner remains unforgettable; combined with his expertise, this contributed to Mo being widely loved and respected. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his wife Sheila his children, and his relatives and friends.
Long-time professor, author, and consultant to the optical industry
As a long-time professor at the University of Ulster, Mo taught students in optics and optometry even after reaching retirement age. He was Head of the Department of Applied Optics at City & Islington from 1968 to 1995.
Furthermore, he was an internationally recognized authority on the design of spectacle lenses and has written several books.
He is the author of some 200 papers on ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses, and dispensing.
Mo devoted much of his life to teaching the science of optometry and optics through a wide variety of channels. His contributions in this field will remain unforgettable within the industry.
Mo’s passing leaves also a huge gap for our trade magazine MAFO– both professionally and personally. For decades, Mo was a highly valued contributor to our magazine and published articles regularly. He was currently working on a series of articles specifically for students, the third part of which can still be read in the current issue.

In addition, he played a key role in shaping MAFO – The Conference. For many years, he enriched the event annually with a new technical presentation. His expertise, reliability, and friendliness made him not only a valued speaker but also a friend with whom one enjoyed spending time in the evenings.
Mo’s contributions in the field of ophthalmic optics have left a lasting impact. He will be remembered as a dedicated scholar, a valued colleague, and an inspiring mentor. His work and spirit will continue to influence future generations.
